Ask the expert: PCOS and weight management

Question: “I have polycystic ovary syndrome and my doctor says keeping my weight managed may help ease symptoms. Do you have any advice for keeping weight in check with PCOS? Do I just follow normal weight-loss advice?”

– Sian, Tasmania

Expert advice:

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition in women that can affect hormones, the menstrual cycle, body weight, fertility and even physical appearance. Many people with PCOS experience insulin resistance, where the body becomes less sensitive to insulin, leading to increased insulin production. This excess insulin can stimulate the ovaries to produce more male hormones, contributing to PCOS symptoms.

Effective management of PCOS often involves weight control, as excess weight can exacerbate symptoms and increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. A well-tailored diet and lifestyle changes can greatly enhance hormone balance and insulin sensitivity. While there’s no one-size-fi ts-all diet for PCOS, to support your PCOS and weight loss goals without experiencing constant hunger, ensure your meals are well balanced and rich in fi bre. They’ll ideally contain slow-release, wholegrain carbohydrates such as brown rice, quinoa, wholemeal pasta or grainy bread; lean protein sources such as eggs, fi sh, chicken, meat, tofu, legumes and beans; plenty of non-starchy veg; and be accompanied by healthy fats like avocado, nuts, seeds and extra-virgin olive oil.
